Ghana Cedi Gains Strength: A Turning Point for the Economy?

The Ghanaian cedi has become the subject of positive attention in both local and international financial circles, after a surprising performance in recent weeks. As of early May 2025, the cedi is trading at approximately GH₵13.20 to the US dollar an improvement from the GH₵14.00 mark recorded just a week earlier.
This upward trend has not gone unnoticed. In fact, Bloomberg recently recognized the Ghana cedi as the world’s best-performing currency in April 2025, gaining nearly 16% in value against the US dollar. This is a remarkable turnaround for a currency that, in previous years, struggled amid economic headwinds.
Analysts attribute this performance to stronger foreign currency inflows, including export earnings and international support, as well as tighter oversight by the Bank of Ghana. The central bank’s regular interventions in the foreign exchange market have helped to steady the currency and rebuild public confidence.
But it’s not just the cedi that’s showing signs of strength—Ghana’s inflation rate is also beginning to ease. According to the Ghana Statistical Service, inflation dropped to 21.2% in April, down from 22.4% in March. This marks the fourth straight month of declining inflation and the lowest rate recorded in eight months.
Economic experts say the cedi’s strength is helping to control prices, especially for imported goods. This comes at a crucial time when the cost of living remains a concern for many Ghanaian households.
In response to persistent inflation, the Bank of Ghana raised interest rates earlier this year. The government also announced spending cuts to reduce public debt and stabilize the economy. Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson has said that the goal is to bring inflation down to around 11.9% by the end of 2025.
The recent developments have sparked cautious optimism. While challenges remain such as high debt levels and reliance on imports the signs of economic recovery are becoming clearer. For now, the cedi’s steady rise is giving Ghanaians a rare reason to smile in a year filled with financial uncertainty.
