Awulae Kwasi Amakyi III, the Paramount Chief and President of the Western Nzema Traditional Council, has declared that Jomoro will be a no-go area for illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey.
Speaking at the Jomoro Development Conference in Half-Assini, Western Region, he said the traditional area would instead revive its coconut industry and promote agro-processing as sustainable sources of employment and improved livelihoods.
The conference, themed “Recollect, Reflect and Refocus,” was part of the activities marking the first anniversary of his enstoolment. He took over from Awulae Annor Adjaye, who stepped down because of health concerns and advanced age.
Awulae Amakyi III described coconut production as the area’s former economic backbone, noting that it supported many families and funded the education of several accomplished Nzema professionals in Ghana and abroad. He said establishing agro-processing factories would add value to coconut production, create jobs and reduce youth unemployment.
The focus of the discussions was on Nzemaland’s historical and cultural background, the development potential of its natural and human resources, and the Petroleum Hub Development Project.
The conference convener, Mr Stephen Blay, said the event brought together Jomoro indigenes with the expertise needed to contribute to the area’s development. He added that the petroleum hub remained a major priority and expressed hope that the project would progress after the government compensates affected farmers and landowners.
