Ngalekyi, November 8, 2025
Today, the people of Ngalekyi held a press conference where they publicly accused their traditional leader of serious misconduct. Community representatives presented a list of ten allegations against the chief, including financial mismanagement and abuse of power. The statement released during the event claimed that the chief’s actions have harmed the community’s welfare and development. Specific charges include embezzling community funds, imposing illegal taxes, and mistreating residents.
The ten charges outlined are as follows:

  1. Instituting a court action against the former Council of Elders (who represented the people of Ngalekyi) concerning community funds (“Owo Bent Kuwu”).
  2. Loss of community-owned canopies and chairs, with missing items unaccounted for.
  3. Depriving the community of its share of revenue from sand winning and embezzling the proceeds.
  4. Imposing exorbitant levies on firewood harvested by vulnerable residents and embezzling the proceeds.
  5. Embezzlement of revenue collected from fines paid for stray animals.
  6. Inhumane punishment and/or treatment of community members.
  7. Unlawful imposition of a curfew.
  8. Unlawful collection of rent/charges from teachers residing at the Ngalekyi Teachers’ Quarters.
  9. Threatening the lives of the people of Ngalekyi.
  10. Undermining of the District Chief Executive (DCE).

Community leaders voiced their frustration regarding what they see as a consistent pattern of “abuse of power and lack of accountability to the community.” They urged the appropriate authorities to conduct an investigation. Shortly after the press conference, the chief contacted this outlet to request a chance to respond. His office mentioned that a formal statement will be issued, which we will publish once we receive it.
