Despite the stern warning and order from government to security agencies to clamp down on galamsey activities in the country, illegal miners have besieged water bodies in the Gwira area of Nzema-East Municipality thereby polluting one of the major river bodies in Ghana; the River Ankobra beyond description.
Readers may recall that the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Hon Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah recently toured some galamsey sites in parts of the country to arrest illegal miners who were polluting river bodies and degrading the land.
However,in spite of the warning, visit and arrest and prosecution of some illegal miners, most of the youth were deeply involved in the galamsey menace in the Gwira area leading to the wanton destruction of sizeable arable lands, water bodies and forest reserves.
Most of these galamsey sites started during the erstwhile admiration.
However,it is admissible that these illegal miners,in the face of warnings from official circles to stop their operations, have rather intensified their activities with new galamsey sites to the full glare of the public.
All efforts to get the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources to respond to the issues, proved abortive.
