June 23, 2025 – The Coalition of Concerned Nzema People (CCNP) has criticized the government for failing to fulfill a promise to establish a Land Committee that was intended to address disputes and concerns surrounding lands tied to the proposed Petroleum Hub in Jomoro.
In a statement released on Monday, CCNP expressed frustration over the lack of progress since March 18, when it was agreed following discussions with the Office of the President that an independent committee would be formed within four weeks. The committee’s role was to clarify the status of affected lands, including stool lands, family lands, and public property, and to ensure that any acquisition processes would be fair and transparent.
“More than three months later, that commitment remains unfulfilled,” the group noted.
CCNP said it sent a formal reminder to the Ministry of Lands on April 15, followed by the submission of its nominee. A response was received the next day, but no concrete steps have been taken to operationalize the committee.

At the same time, the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation (PHDC) has been engaging in outreach, community visits, and land-related discussions without oversight, according to CCNP. The group argues that these actions could distort facts, mislead the public, and sideline rightful landowners.
“They are creating the illusion of consensus without addressing the real ownership concerns,” CCNP stated.
The coalition warns that these actions may damage public trust and aggravate tensions in the area.
CCNP is now urging the Chief of Staff and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to uphold their commitment without further delay. The group insists that forming the Land Committee is essential to protecting the rights of Nzema communities and ensuring transparency in the process.
In addition, CCNP is calling for an immediate halt to all PHDC-related activities in the Jomoro area until the committee is in place and active.
“Continuing these engagements without oversight risks undermining the very principles of fairness and due process,” the group emphasized.
