The fishes, heavily contaminated with the infamous ‘Galamsey’, has left everyone, fishermen and residents of the fishing community of Kamgbunli , stunned. After noticing the unusual colouring of the fish, which is believed to be caused by mercury, and other toxic chemicals from illegal mining, the fishermen raised the alarm.
The incident has raised concerns among residents of Kamgbunli , a suburb in Ghana’s Western Region, and they are calling for immediate intervention by the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture and the Ministry of Health.
Environmentalists have long warned of the devastating effects of galamsey on the environment and public health, and the current situation in Kamgbunli has brought the problem into sharp focus. The discovery of contaminated fish is a reminder of the urgency for the government to curb this destructive practice.
We at Nzematoday Media are now calling for immediate investigations and public health warnings to prevent the potential spread of contamination. The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture is also urged to take swift action to assess the damage to aquatic life and enforce regulations that protect fisheries resources from pollution.
