September 27, 2025, In a twist of events, the U.S. visa restrictions recently imposed on Ghana have been reversed. Ghanaians are now eligible for five-year, multiple-entry visas and other enhanced consular privileges.
The decision was communicated directly to Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Samuel Okudjato Ablakwa, by Allison Hooker, U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, during a bilateral meeting on Friday, September 26, on the margins of the UN General Assembly.
“I am really pleased that months of high-level diplomatic negotiations have led to a successful outcome,” said Minister Okudjato Ablakwa.
It will be recalled that the U.S. imposed visa restrictions on Ghana and other countries in July this year. The affected countries were limited to single-entry visas valid for up to three months and other constraints. In Ghana’s case, the Trump Administration said the measures responded to years of visa overstays, mainly by students.
This turn of events is therefore a welcome step toward healthier, stronger Ghana–U.S. relations.
