May 30, 2025 – The recent arrest and continued detention of the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has sparked significant political reaction and public debate.
Chairman Wontumi was taken into custody by the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO), also referred to as YOKO, following allegations involving fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state. Though bail was granted reportedly set at 50 million cedis with two sureties he remains in custody, as the bail conditions have yet to be fulfilled.
His continued detention, more than 48 hours after the bail was granted, has raised legal and constitutional concerns. Critics point to Articles 14 and 296 of Ghana’s Constitution, which pertain to personal liberty and fair administrative procedures. Questions have also been raised about the human rights implications, particularly following reports that the chairman may have embarked on a hunger strike while in custody.
In response to the situation, members of the minority in Parliament staged a symbolic protest. Lawmakers were seen abandoning parliamentary proceedings and taking to the streets in what appeared to be a coordinated demonstration demanding Wontumi’s release. Images circulated showing MPs seated on the bare ground, staging what they described as a silent civil protest.
The minority caucus previously announced a boycott of parliamentary activities until the chairman’s release. However, less than 24 hours later, a return to the floor by several MPs was observed, raising questions about internal alignment or strategic reconsideration within the caucus.
Efforts to meet the bail requirements are reportedly ongoing. Former Vice President Dr. Bawumia has been linked to attempts to secure a second surety, which may help finalize the bail process. Speculation also suggests that high-level political figures are working to resolve the matter quietly, as supporters gather near the EOCO offices in Accra.
As of the latest developments, no official statement has been issued to clarify when the NPP chairman might be released or whether the bail conditions will be adjusted. The case continues to evolve, drawing widespread attention from political observers, legal analysts, and the Ghanaian public.
More updates will be published as the story develops.
