June 2, 2025 – In a decisive move that intensifies Ghana’s anti-corruption drive, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has officially declared former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta a wanted person and a fugitive from justice. This declaration, made during a press conference held on Monday, June 2, was accompanied by the issuance of an Interpol Red Notice aimed at securing his arrest and extradition.
The Special Prosecutor, Mr. Kissi Agyebeng, disclosed that Ofori-Atta had failed to honor multiple invitations for questioning in connection with several high-profile corruption investigations. Among the ongoing probes are matters involving the controversial National Cathedral project, a revenue assurance contract linked to the Ghana Revenue Authority, and alleged irregularities in the procurement of ambulance spare parts.
Ofori-Atta’s legal representatives had requested a virtual interrogation, citing health concerns, including a reported cancer diagnosis and an imminent medical procedure. However, the OSP rejected this request, maintaining that a physical appearance was necessary for due process.
“The rule of law demands accountability, not convenience,” Agyebeng asserted during the briefing. “No individual regardless of status is above the law.”
He added that should the former minister continue to evade proceedings, the OSP is prepared to file criminal charges in absentia.
This latest development marks a significant moment in Ghana’s fight against corruption and signals the OSP’s intent to hold powerful individuals accountable, regardless of political or social standing.
The OSP further called on members of the public and international partners to assist in locating Mr. Ofori-Atta to ensure he is brought to justice.
