June 22, 2025 – Residents of Takoradi on Saturday embarked on a massive clean-up exercise to rid the commercial capital of the Western Region of filth and refuse.
The exercise follows torrential rains that recently flooded many homes and shops in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis. The flooding, caused by choked gutters, resulted in damage to lives and property.
This clean-up forms part of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA)’s efforts to address the severe flooding in the twin-city, especially as the rainy season intensifies.

Readers may recall that parts of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, including the Central Business District, were recently submerged, with residents left undeterred despite the destruction.
During the exercise, officials from the STMA’s Works Department, along with spirited residents, jointly cleared clogged drains filled with refuse and filth. These blockages had contributed significantly to the recent flooding by obstructing water flow.
However, the large volumes of refuse removed from the drains were piled on major roads in the Central Business District, raising concerns about proper disposal.

Some residents who spoke to Nzema Today TV News attributed the persistent flooding to shallow drains, which are prone to getting choked with waste and debris.
