September 23,2025, His Excellency, President John Dramani Mahama, has appointed His Lordship, Mr. Paul Baffoe Bonney, as the Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana, following consultations with the Council of State. This appointment aligns with Article 144 (1) of the 1992 Constitution. It comes after the dismissal of the former Chief Justice, Her Lordship Justice Gertrude Torkorno, who was removed due to gross misconduct after an investigation by a committee. This information was shared in a statement from the Presidency at the Flagstaff House, signed by the President’s Spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications.
According to the statement, Justice Paul Baffoe Bonney has had a remarkable judicial career, serving diligently at the High Court, the Court of Appeal, and currently at the Supreme Court. “He has made invaluable contributions to the development of Ghanaian jurisprudence,” the statement noted. It also highlighted that he has earned the respect of the bar, the bench, and the broader legal community for his intellect, impartiality, and steadfast commitment to justice. His extensive experience and long service on the bench make him exceptionally qualified for the esteemed position of Chief Justice. Before his official appointment, His Lordship, Paul Baffoe Bonney, served as the Acting Chief Justice starting February 22 of this year. Experts who spoke to Nzematoday TV believe that the new Chief Justice will leverage his rich experience to enhance justice delivery and strengthen the justice system in Ghana.
