A violent confrontation over sand-winning operations has left five people dead at Asiyaw, a community near Akwane-Dobro in the Nsawam area. The incident, which occurred on Monday, April 29, is currently under investigation by the Eastern South Regional Police Command.
According to a police statement, officers who arrived at the scene found the lifeless bodies of five male adults, all with gunshot wounds. The clash is believed to have involved two rival groups reportedly competing for control over sand-winning activities in the area.
Items recovered from the scene include:
- One Toyota Tacoma pickup
- One Toyota Tundra pickup
- One pump action shotgun with 17 live cartridges
- Four spent cartridges
- Three 7.62/39mm shells
- One 9mm shell
- Five heavy-duty motorbikes
Police sources suggest that tensions between the groups escalated into gunfire, leading to the deadly outcome. The bodies have been taken to the Police Hospital mortuary for identification, preservation, and autopsy.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing, with efforts underway to identify and arrest those responsible. The Ghana Police Service is urging residents to remain calm and assist with any information that could aid in the investigation.
This latest incident highlights growing concerns about land-related disputes and illegal mining and sand-winning operations, which have led to violence in several parts of the country.
