June 18, 2025 – The coastal community of Ankobra, traditionally known as Sanwoma, is facing an imminent natural disaster due to the absence of a sea defence wall, as fears mount over potential water spillage.
Located in the Ellembelle District, Ankobra is bordered by the sea to the south and the estuary of the River Ankobra to the east, making the town highly susceptible to flooding.
A visit to the town revealed disturbing scenes of water spilling from the galamsey polluted sea into the Ankobra estuary, flooding parts of the community.

Speaking to Nzema Today TV, the Assembly Member for the Ankobra Electoral Area, Mr. Patrick Assuah, described the situation as a looming disaster that threatens the very survival of residents.
He appealed to the government to urgently construct a sea defence wall to prevent further water intrusion into the town. Mr. Assuah also pointed to the newly constructed sea defence wall in neighbouring Axim as a contributing factor to the rising water levels at Ankobra, suggesting it may be redirecting tidal forces.
He further called on the Ellembelle District Assembly and the government to take immediate action to address the crisis. Mr. Assuah highlighted the lack of proper drainage systems in Ankobra, warning that any significant spillage could submerge the entire town.
Officials from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), led by Ellembelle District Director Mr. Bright Erzah, have visited the community to assess the situation. Mr. Erzah assured residents of NADMO’s readiness to implement contingency measures to mitigate the impact.
Ankobra has experienced flooding from water spillage in the past, resulting in significant property damage.
