August 16, 2025 – The meeting between president Donald Trump and president Vladimir Putin in Alaska wrapped up on Friday with friendly exchanges but no solid agreements regarding the war in Ukraine. While Trump had previously called for a ceasefire, it appears that Putin primarily used the opportunity to gain an advantage on the battlefield. In Alaska, which both leaders referred to as historic ground, the U.S. and Russian presidents shook hands for the first time since the 2022 invasion. They engaged in discussions for over two and a half hours behind closed doors. Putin expressed gratitude to Trump for the invitation and highlighted the “neighborly” relationship between their nations. He commended Trump’s “friendly tone,” yet did not present any specific proposals. Instead, he placed the blame for the conflict on Trump’s successor, Joe Biden, stating, “This war would never have started under Trump.” Trump also remained vague in his comments. He praised his “good relationship” with Putin three times and mentioned that “progress” had been made, but he refrained from sharing any details. “There is no deal until there is a deal,” he noted. No follow-up meeting has been arranged.
From the beginning, Washington was anticipated to advocate for progress. Since he took office, Trump has portrayed himself as a peacemaker, but in recent months, he has become increasingly frustrated with Putin’s ongoing military actions. The unclear outcome in Alaska seems to benefit the Russian president for the time being. Interestingly, the relationship between Moscow and Washington appears to be warmer than it has been in years, despite Trump’s recent threats of additional sanctions, which seem to have been put on hold. After the discussions, Trump expressed optimism, stating, “Putin also wants the suffering to end.” However, doubts linger. Without any solid commitments, it is primarily Putin who has achieved his goals. As former national security adviser John Bolton remarked, “Trump may not have lost, but Putin has won.” What comes next is uncertain. Trump was expected to reach out to European allies, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who was not invited to Alaska. Earlier this week, European leaders attempted to sway Trump, urging him to take into account European and Ukrainian security concerns. Whether these concerns will be included in a future peace agreement remains to be seen. Putin concluded the meeting on a lighthearted note, suggesting, “Next time in Moscow?” Trump did not respond.
