March 6, 2026, A massive clean-up exercise characterized the 69th Independence Day anniversary celebrations in Axim, the capital of the Nzema East Municipal Assembly.
The entire workforce of the Municipal Assembly, including the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ghana Education Service, the Ghana Immigration Service, the National Disaster Management Organization, and other service providers, joined the exercise as early as 6:30 AM
The exercise, which started at Victoria Park in front of Fort Saint Antonio, involved general cleaning activities such as sweeping, weeding, desilting choked gutters, clearing refuse and debris along the seashore, and collecting garbage in public spaces.
Mr. Herbert Kuah Dickson, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Nzema East, told the media in an interview that instead of keeping schoolchildren in the scorching sun during the Independence Day anniversary parade, the government shifted the focus to organizing massive clean-up exercises in all the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) across the country.
He said sanitation was very dear to the heart of the government, as it embodied the health and well-being of the people.
Hon. Kuah-Dickson said the exercise would rid the municipal capital of filth and the stench emanating from choked gutters, thereby ensuring sustainable sanitation in the municipality.
The MCE commended the workforce of the Municipal Assembly, especially the security agencies such as the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service, for the massive turnout and full participation in the exercise.
Hon. Kuah-Dickson expressed the hope that the exercise would be sustained annually to make Ghana a cleaner and more attractive place.
For his part, Hon. Kofi Arko Nokoe, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Evalue Ajomoro-Gwira, said the exercise was the best substitute for the Independence Day anniversary celebrations in each district, considering the waste of public funds associated with the usual parades.
He observed that Ghana was being restored to her former glory, as the government was committed to doing everything possible to ensure proper sanitation and prevent airborne diseases.
The MP also commended the involvement of workers in the municipality, particularly the security agencies, for their active participation.
