July 8, 2025 –The leadership of the Ningo Traditional Council has raised strong objections to reports that an individual claiming to be a king of the Igbo people is attempting to create a kingdom in Old Ningo, located in the Greater Accra Region.
In an official letter addressed to the Ministry of the Interior and copied to the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, the Council described the move as unacceptable and inconsistent with local customs and governance structures. The letter, signed by Paramount Chief HRM Nene Osoroagbo Djangmah XII, urged the government to investigate the matter and take urgent steps to halt any unauthorized activities.
According to the Traditional Council, landowners in the area have not sold any property to the individual in question for the purpose of creating a kingdom. The Council emphasized that the Ningo Paramountcy is under the sole leadership of HRM Nene Osoroagbo Djangmah XII and does not recognize any other authority or ruler within its territory.
The chiefs further warned that such actions, if left unchecked, could spark tension in the area. They have asked the Interior Minister to collaborate with local traditional authorities to prevent unrest and ensure peace is maintained.
They also called on their Member of Parliament to advocate for immediate attention from higher government officials to protect the integrity of Ningo’s heritage and authority. Additionally, they urged the District Chief Executive and the local planning authorities not to approve any building permits that could facilitate the development of the proposed kingdom.
While reaffirming their openness to settlers and foreigners, the Council was clear that all residents must respect the existing traditional leadership and refrain from setting up alternative governance structures.
“We host people from over twenty nationalities peacefully,” the statement noted. “But none have attempted to form a kingdom or challenge the authority of the Ningo Traditional Council.”
The Council closed the letter with a strong appeal for national unity, traditional respect, and the rule of law, expressing confidence in the Interior Minister’s ability to handle the issue decisively.
