September 18, 2025, Excitement is building in Nkroful as people from all walks of life make their way to the historic town to mark the 116th birthday of Ghana’s first Prime Minister and President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
This year’s celebration is themed “Journey to Nkroful: Unite, Celebrate, and Enjoy.”
Among the dignitaries expected to attend are Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama and Burkina Faso’s President Ibrahim Traoré.
Speaking to journalists in Nkroful where Dr. Nkrumah was both born and laid to rest Mr. John Kwaw Nketiah, Chairman of the NKRUMAFEST Planning Committee, said preparations have been meticulous to ensure a memorable celebration.
The festivities kicked off on Saturday, September 13, with a massive communal cleanup exercise along the Esiama–Nkroful–Teleku-Bokazo road stretch. The celebration will peak on Sunday, September 21, which has been declared Founder’s Day a national holiday.
On Sunday, September 14, a special thanksgiving service was held to thank God and dedicate the entire programme to His care.
Monday, September 15, and Tuesday, September 16, brought “Local Artistes Night” to life, featuring electrifying performances by musicians from the Nzema area.
The energy continued midweek with a lively community gala on Wednesday, September 17, and Thursday, September 18, showcasing football talents from towns across the region in a spirited soccer competition.
This Friday and Saturday, a People’s Assembly will give community members the chance to engage directly on key national issues.
Everything will culminate in a grand durbar on Sunday, September 21, with speeches, live music, and the symbolic lighting of the perpetual flame at the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum.

Mr. Nketiah highlighted several improvements made for the occasion, including new streetlights installed along the Esiama–Nkroful–Teleku-Bokazo stretch, thanks to the efforts of Ellembelle MP Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah. The main road leading into Nkroful has also been graded and improved.
“This year’s celebration is going to be fantabulous,” Mr. Nketiah said, revealing that a new monument will be unveiled in honour of Dr. Nkrumah.
He also praised President Mahama for reinstating Nkrumah’s birthday as a national holiday and elevating it to a festival under the Ghana Tourism Authority.
“He is a President whose work is undoubtedly phenomenal. Declaring Dr. Nkrumah’s birthday a holiday is a step in the right direction,” Mr. Nketiah added.
