July 8, 2025 – A final-year student of the Wood Technology Department at Kikam Technical Institute (KIMTECH), Master Shaibu Dauda, tragically lost his life at Asemko Beach over the weekend.
The unfortunate incident occurred on Saturday, July 5, when he accompanied his colleagues from the boarding house to the beach.
According to sources close to Nzema Today TV News, Master Shaibu Dauda, a native of Kamgbunli in the Ellembelle District, was sitting on the seashore enjoying the breeze and did not join his friends who were swimming. However, tragedy struck unexpectedly.
The Principal of KIMTECH, Mr. Emmanuel Nomah, who confirmed the incident to Nzema Today TV News, stated that the deceased was among a group of final-year students who had received permission from the Senior Housemaster to play football on campus that Saturday.
After playing for some time, the students exited the school compound through a section that is not yet walled and proceeded to the beach without the knowledge of school authorities.
At the beach, Master Shaibu remained on the shore while his friends swam in the sea. Surprisingly, after the group had finished swimming and were preparing to return to campus, Master Shaibu decided to wash his body with seawater. Unfortunately, he was swept away by strong sea currents and drowned.
His body was discovered washed ashore at Asemko in the Ellembelle District on the morning of Monday, July 7.
Remarkably, all his friends who entered the sea returned safely.
Master Shaibu has since been buried according to Islamic traditions in his hometown, Kamgbunli.
The Principal noted that this is the second drowning incident in seven years involving a student. He added that Master Shaibu was scheduled to write his final core subject paper on Monday, July 7, and would have completed his studies next week after sitting for the final part of his elective papers.
Mr. Nomah emphasized that school authorities enforce discipline and provide counseling for students, but recent interference from official quarters has negatively impacted effective school administration, particularly in boarding institutions.
He appealed to the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, to intensify the disciplinary reforms he has promised to restore sanity, respect, and a sense of responsibility in schools.
