May 24, 2025 – A political storm is brewing in Ghana’s Ashanti Region following a dramatic standoff between Bernard Antwi Boasiako popularly known as Chairman Wontumi and security officials who conducted a search operation at his residence.
The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) alleges that the raid was a politically motivated attempt to frame him and silence dissent within the opposition.
Security Operation Sparks Uproar:
On the evening of May 23, armed personnel from the Ghana Police Service and National Security descended on Chairman Wontumi’s home in Kumasi. The reason given: to conduct a search, reportedly under a warrant. However, Wontumi claims the officers failed to show proper legal documentation and suspects that the operation’s true aim was to plant illegal substances such as narcotics in his home.
“There was no warrant, and they tried to break in forcefully. This was an attempt to destroy my reputation,” Wontumi told the media after the confrontation.
He went on to describe the operation as excessive, claiming that more than 100 heavily armed officers arrived with tools like hammers and pickaxes, while a helicopter hovered nearby, allegedly prepared to transport him out of the region.
Allegations of Political Persecution:
Chairman Wontumi believes the raid was orchestrated by President John Mahama’s administration as part of a broader crackdown on vocal opposition members. He says several of his business ventures, including mining operations and media outlets, have been targeted, with accounts reportedly frozen by state agencies.
“This is not just about me; it’s about silencing anyone who dares to challenge the current government,” he said.
His comments have ignited political debate and rallied NPP supporters, many of whom gathered outside his home in protest following the incident.
Government Responds:
In response to the backlash, Deputy Interior Minister Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi clarified that the operation was not intended to arrest Wontumi but to invite him for questioning based on intelligence reports.
“It was a routine security engagement, not a politically charged operation. There is no cause for alarm,” the minister stated.
Following rising tensions, the National Investigations Bureau (NIB) reportedly withdrew its officers from the scene to de-escalate the situation.
Legal Action in Progress:
Chairman Wontumi has taken legal steps against the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, accusing the government of preventing him from operating legally registered mining concessions. He insists that his documentation is in order and believes the interference is part of a targeted campaign.
He has also agreed to respond to an earlier police invitation, indicating he will cooperate with authorities on May 26.
A Growing Political Flashpoint:
As the situation unfolds, many are watching closely to see how this incident will impact national politics, especially with the heightened tensions following the last general elections. The raid has stirred concerns over the politicization of security agencies and the treatment of opposition figures.
